Project Overview
AWS CLI (Amazon Web Services Command Line Interface) is the official unified tool for creating, configuring, and managing AWS resources such as EC2, S3, and IAM directly from the terminal. Built in Python, it condenses multi-step console workflows into single commands and is the foundation for scripted and automated AWS operations.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Platform | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Language | Python |
| Python versions | 3.9 - 3.14 |
| Current major version | v2 |
One command line for every AWS service.
Key Features
- Unified entry point: a single
awscommand covers operations for nearly all AWS services - Multiple credential sources: environment variables, a shared credentials file, config files, and IAM Roles
- Profiles: switch between accounts and regions with
--profile - Command completion: the bundled aws_completer enables Tab completion for bash, zsh, and tcsh
- Configurable output: output format can be set to json and more for easy script parsing
- Installers for all platforms: official packages for macOS, Windows, and Linux x86-64/arm64
Target Audience
- Cloud operations engineers
- DevOps engineers
- Backend developers
- Automation script authors
Quick Start
- Download and run the installer for your platform (pkg on macOS, MSI on Windows, executable zip on Linux)
- Run the configuration wizard and enter your keys, default region, and output format:
aws configure- Alternatively configure credentials through environment variables:
export AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID=<access_key>
export AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY=<secret_key>- Verify the installation:
aws --versionCore Advantages
- Official tool: maintained by AWS, so new services and features are supported here first
- Automation friendly: a pure command interface fits naturally into shell scripts and CI/CD pipelines
- Consistent across platforms: identical command usage on Windows, macOS, and Linux
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows, macOS 11+, Linux |
| Architecture | x86-64, arm64 (aarch64) |
Notes
- macOS support: CLI v2 requires macOS 11 or later; upgrade older systems first
- Credentials: environment variables, shared credential files, config files, and IAM Roles are supported; IAM Roles are recommended on EC2 instances
- Manual completion setup: Tab completion is not installed automatically; zsh users need
bashcompinitandcompinitfirst
