README

Project Overview

MediaMTX is a ready-to-use, zero-dependency live media server and media proxy that allows publishing, reading, proxying, recording, and playback of real-time video and audio streams. It is conceived as a "media router" that routes streams from one end to the other, focusing on efficiency and portability.

Key Features

  • Publish streams: Supports Media-over-QUIC, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS, MPEG-TS, RTP
  • Read streams: Supports Media-over-QUIC, SRT, WebRTC, RTSP, RTMP, HLS
  • Automatic protocol conversion: Streams are automatically converted from one protocol to another
  • Multi-path support: Serve several streams at once in separate paths
  • Hot reloading: Reload configuration without disconnecting existing clients
  • Always-available streams: Serve streams even when the publisher is offline
  • Recording and playback: Record streams to disk in fMP4 or MPEG-TS format, and playback recorded streams
  • Authentication: Internal, HTTP, or JWT authentication
  • Stream forwarding: Forward streams to other servers
  • Request proxying: Proxy requests to other servers
  • Control API: Control the server through the Control API
  • Metrics export: Export metrics in Prometheus-compatible format
  • Performance monitoring: Investigate CPU and RAM consumption
  • Hooks: Run external commands when clients connect, disconnect, read, or publish streams
  • Cross-platform: Compatible with Linux, Windows, and macOS, single executable with no dependencies

Target Audience

  • Developers who need to set up a live media server
  • Streaming engineers who need cross-protocol media routing and forwarding
  • Users of tools like FFmpeg, GStreamer, and OBS Studio

Quick Start

  1. Visit mediamtx.org for installation guides
  2. Download the single executable for your platform
  3. Configure and start MediaMTX
  4. Publish or read streams using supported protocols

Core Advantages

  • Zero dependencies, single executable, cross-platform
  • Supports multiple mainstream streaming protocols with automatic conversion
  • Feature-rich: recording, playback, authentication, forwarding, proxying, and more
  • Hot-reload configuration without service interruption

System Requirements

  • OS: Linux, Windows, macOS
