README

Project Overview

CastScreen is a DLNA casting receiver (DMR) for Android TV boxes, a minimalist alternative to LeBo casting that focuses only on core casting. On the phone, tap the cast or TV button in apps such as Bilibili, Douyin, Tencent Video and iQIYI, select this device, and the content plays on the TV. It uses a fully self-developed DLNA/UPnP protocol stack with no third-party casting SDK dependency.

Key Features

  • Self-developed DLNA/UPnP stack: SSDP discovery, device and service description, SOAP control and GENA events
  • Standard MediaRenderer: one device with AVTransport, RenderingControl and ConnectionManager services
  • Compatibility with mainstream apps: Bilibili, Douyin, Tencent Video and iQIYI
  • Minimalist standby page and fullscreen playback page, with D-pad rotating the picture directly
  • Foreground service keep-alive, launch at startup, and the service stays online after network jitter
  • Both landscape and portrait videos display correctly with contain scaling and no distortion
  • Single process, no IPC Binder overhead

Target Audience

  • Users who want to receive phone casts on an Android TV or TV box
  • Users who prefer a minimalist casting tool with no login and no ads
  • Developers interested in a self-developed DLNA protocol stack

Quick Start

  1. Download app-debug.apk from Releases and push it to the TV box with adb install -r
  2. Launch the app; the standby page shows the device name and IP and the service runs in the background
  3. Connect the phone and TV to the same WiFi
  4. Tap cast in the phone app and select this device; playback starts automatically
  5. Use the D-pad up and down keys to rotate, the center key to pause or resume, and Back to exit

Core Advantages

  • Self-developed protocol stack with no third-party casting SDK dependency
  • Minimalist and lightweight, focused only on core casting
  • Rotation, pause and resume handled entirely with the remote control
  • Videos scaled to fit without distortion or cropping

System Requirements

  • OS: Android (Android TV box)
  • Other: the phone and TV must be on the same local network
  • Build dependencies: JDK 17 and Android SDK 36, with Media3 pinned to 1.8.x

Notes

  • AirPlay is not supported; only DLNA is implemented for now
  • Rotation is limited to 90-degree steps, not arbitrary angles
  • After a WiFi switch or network disconnection, the app must be restarted to recover, as this version does not monitor network changes
  • The device name is randomly generated and there is currently no way to change it in the UI
  • The v1.0.0 APK is a debug build without obfuscation or release signing; later versions will move to signed releases
  • This is a private project and all rights are reserved
