README
Project Overview
MovieWall is a local media poster-wall app for Windows. It scans the folders you specify, builds a media database and fetches metadata, turning videos scattered across your drives into a streaming-style poster wall that opens in an external player such as PotPlayer.
Turns the videos on your drive into a poster wall like a streaming service.
Key Features
- Poster wall: scans local media folders and builds a streaming-style cover wall
- Automatic discovery: new folders placed under the root are discovered and categorized with no manual configuration
- Smart episode detection: detects season and episode structure, supporting
S01E01and第1集style names - Metadata fetching: pulls titles, overviews, ratings and covers from TMDB and Douban
- Thumbnail generation: extracts a video frame as a thumbnail at a configured timestamp
- Cast system: actor detail pages with their related works
- Ratings and favorites: local ratings, favorites and a dedicated tab
- Tags and sorting: tag videos on the detail page, filter by tag, and choose from several sort modes
- Media management: delete a whole show or a single season from the detail page
- External player integration: opens videos in PotPlayer and syncs playback history
Target Audience
- Users who keep video collections on local drives
- Movie fans who want a poster-wall browsing experience
- Users of external players such as PotPlayer
Quick Start
- Download the packaged build from Releases, unzip and run it, with no Python setup needed
- Before the first run, copy the sample config to
config.jsonand fill in the media root and TMDB API key - Configuration can also be changed in the in-app settings panel, so no manual file editing is needed later
- The app scans the folders and builds the media database; a slow first scan is normal
- Switch browsing by category or sorting, then open a detail page to play via an external player
- Rate, favorite or tag a video on its detail page
Core Advantages
- Ready to run: an official packaged build that needs no runtime setup
- Little manual work: automatic folder discovery and name parsing reduce data entry
- Local data: the media database, ratings and favorites all stay on your machine
- Player freedom: keeps using the external player you already know instead of forcing a built-in one
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows; other systems can run from source |
| Runtime | None for the packaged build; Python 3.8+ when running from source |
| Other | A TMDB API key; ffmpeg for thumbnail generation |
Notes
- The packaged build may be flagged by some antivirus software, in which case run from source instead
- Douban has no stable public API, so metadata scraping may mis-match or fail to update
- Non-standard naming (mixed languages, missing episode numbers, specials) lowers recognition accuracy
- The first scan performs recognition, API requests, thumbnail generation and cache building, which takes longer on large libraries
