README

Project Overview

TTS Server is an Android system-level text-to-speech (TTS) app that wires several online speech services into a system TTS engine for reading apps to call. It bundles a Microsoft demo endpoint, supports custom HTTP requests to connect self-hosted or third-party services, and can import local TTS engines. It also separates narration from dialogue by Chinese quotation marks and offers automatic retries, backup configs, and text replacement.

Wire many speech services into the system and let reading apps speak.

Key Features

  • System TTS engine: implements the Android standard TTS interface for global use by reading apps
  • Built-in demo endpoint: a bundled Microsoft demo endpoint works right after install
  • Custom requests: define HTTP requests to connect self-hosted or third-party services
  • Local engine import: import other local TTS engines
  • Narration and dialogue: distinguish narration from dialogue by Chinese quotation marks with separate settings
  • Automatic retry: retry failed synthesis and fall back to a backup config
  • Text replacement: rule-based replacement to normalize text before speaking
  • Multiple profiles: save several configurations and switch quickly

Target Audience

  • Users who listen to books with reading apps
  • Users who need to connect a self-hosted speech service
  • Advanced users managing system TTS centrally

Quick Start

  1. Download and install the stable APK from Releases
  2. Open the app and choose a speech endpoint, then configure its parameters
  3. Set TTS Server as the default speech engine in system settings
  4. Enable reading in your reading app to start listening

Core Advantages

  • Flexible integration: both online endpoints and local engines work, with free configuration
  • Natural reading: narration and dialogue handled separately for an audiobook-like feel
  • Stable and reliable: retries and backup configs reduce interruptions

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android
Build from source Android Studio and JDK
Network Online synthesis needs access to the service

Notes

  • The demo endpoint may change at any time; a self-hosted service is recommended
  • Custom requests require understanding the target service's parameters
  • This project is for study only; follow the related service terms
