Project Overview
Software Data Migrator is a Windows 10/11 desktop tool for PC migration. It scans installed software, infers the user-data directories scattered across %APPDATA%, %LOCALAPPDATA%, and %PROGRAMDATA%, and maps "software to data" into a list so you can back up first and delete after before reinstalling or switching PCs. It holds a strict safety line: it only reads the registry and only touches user-data directories, never system folders.
Before migrating, map out each app's config and cache, then decide what to back up and what to delete.
Key Features
- Five-step workflow: scan, review and filter, manually correct, back up, then delete or uninstall
- Scan and inference: reads registry uninstall entries and MSIX/Store apps, enumerates data directories, and infers ownership and size
- Filter and review: keyword search, content type, recognition status, and Top-N large directories, with oversized directories highlighted
- Manual correction: cancel or manually assign ownership, persisted for the next scan
- Backup packaging: checked items are packed into a ZIP with a
manifest.jsonand matching directory structure - Safe deletion: four confirmation gates before deletion, with a reversible move-to-Recycle-Bin option by default
- Uninstall apps: calls each app's own uninstall command, with an optional silent flag
- List export: export results as CSV (Excel-friendly) or JSON
Target Audience
- Users about to reinstall Windows or change computers
- People cleaning up leftover app data
- IT staff migrating data for others
- Safety-conscious users wary of deleting system folders
Quick Start
- Install Python 3.10 or later and run
pip install -r requirements.txt - Launch with
python run.py, or runpython -m src.main - Click "Scan" at the top left to run registry, MSIX, directory, and size inference
- Locate items with the filter bar, and right-click to assign ownership manually when needed
- Check items, click "Back Up Selected", and delete or uninstall only after verifying
Core Advantages
- Safety first: the critical-system-directory blacklist is checked in both the UI and the executor, so alternate path spellings cannot bypass it
- Inference engine: L1-to-L6 layered ownership inference with a Chinese/English alias table and conflict resolution
- Reversible deletion: defaults to the Recycle Bin to avoid unrecoverable mistakes
- Packable for distribution: a PyInstaller config produces a portable, no-install directory build
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10/11 (x64) |
| Runtime | Python 3.10 or later |
| Dependency | PySide6-Essentials 6.8.3; everything else uses the standard library |
Notes
- Run as administrator for a fuller MSIX list or to uninstall system-level software
- Backup restore is not implemented yet; archives are standard ZIPs you can unpack manually
- Post-uninstall registry cleanup is not implemented; use the leftover scan and clean manually
- Recognition rate depends on your app mix; portable apps and generic folders may stay "unrecognized" and can be assigned manually
