Project Overview

Kdenlive is a free and open-source video editor that brings professional-grade editing to projects of any size, from simple home videos to complex productions. It offers multi-track timelines, transitions and effects, titles, and audio tools, staying approachable for beginners while organizing long projects clearly. Written in C++, it is built on the MLT framework and KDE Frameworks with a Qt interface, and runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Item Value
Platform Windows, macOS, Linux
Type Video editing / non-linear editing
Tech stack C++, MLT, Qt, KDE Frameworks

Deliver professional-looking edits without paying for them.

Key Features

  • Multi-track timeline: arrange video and audio on multiple tracks that can be grouped and nested
  • Editing tools: cut, trim, ripple delete, and rolling edits
  • Transitions and effects: built-in transitions and effects plus frei0r effect support
  • Audio tools: volume, fades, and gain adjustments with audio effect plugins
  • Titles and subtitles: create titles, subtitles, and scrolling credits in multiple languages
  • Keyframe animation: animate parameters for movement, zoom, and fading
  • Proxy editing: generate low-bitrate proxies for large footage to keep previews smooth
  • Flexible export: output common delivery formats from presets with custom settings
  • Render queue: background rendering and job queues for long exports

Target Audience

  • Video editing hobbyists and creators
  • Short-form and social media creators
  • Teams that need a free editing solution
  • Film, TV, and educational content producers

Quick Start

  1. Download and install the version for your system from the official website or software center
  2. Create a project and set its frame rate, resolution, and save path
  3. Drag footage into the project bin, then onto timeline tracks
  4. Trim unwanted parts with the cut and trim tools and add transitions between clips
  5. Open the effects panel for filters or grading, then drag an effect onto a clip
  6. Export through the render panel, or queue long projects for background rendering

Core Advantages

  • Professional capability for free: multi-track editing and effects with no fees or subscriptions
  • Low barrier to entry: an intuitive interface gets beginners to a first cut quickly
  • Broad format support: the MLT framework handles many source and output formats
  • Scales to big projects: bins, markers, and the render queue keep long edits organized
  • Cross-platform and open: builds for all three systems with open code

System Requirements

Item Value
OS Windows, macOS, Linux
Frameworks MLT, Qt, and KDE Frameworks runtime libraries
RAM 8 GB or more recommended for HD and multi-track projects
Disk space Footage and proxy files are large; leave ample free space

Notes

  • Proxies rescue smoothness: generate proxies for high-bitrate or 4K footage, or previews will stutter
  • Render time follows your setup: more effects and keyframes mean longer exports
  • Subtitles need fonts installed: make sure the right Chinese fonts are present or subtitles may render incorrectly
  • Package projects when moving: project files reference footage paths, so use the project archiving feature to move work between machines
