README
Project Overview
Krita is a free and open-source digital painting application that covers the whole process from first sketch to finished piece. It is built for comic artists, illustrators, concept artists, matte and texture painters, and the visual effects industry. It is developed on the KDE and Qt frameworks, runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and organizes its interface and tools around the way artists actually paint on a tablet.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Platform | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Type | Digital painting / illustration |
| Core strengths | Brush engine, painting tools, frame animation |
| License | GPL-3.0 |
Made for painters, covering everything from first stroke to final piece.
Key Features
- Brush engine: a large set of adjustable brushes with pressure, tilt, and texture control
- Stabilizers: several line-smoothing modes that make long strokes and inking easier
- Layers and groups: layer groups, blend modes, clipping masks, and transparency masks
- Vector tools: vector layers and path tools for inking, icons, and lossless scaling
- Comic helpers: comic panel templates, assistants, and perspective grids
- Animation: a frame-by-frame timeline for drawing and exporting image sequences
- Selections and transforms: rich selection tools plus free transform for local edits
- Scripting and plugins: a built-in Python interface for extending features and batch work
- Resource manager: brushes, patterns, and gradients can be bundled and shared
Target Audience
- Illustrators and concept artists
- Comic and webtoon creators
- VFX and matte painters
- Tablet painting hobbyists
Quick Start
- Download and install the package for your platform from the official website
- Create a new canvas and set its size, resolution, and color space
- Pick a brush in the brush panel and start sketching with a drawing tablet
- Paint on separate layers and turn on a stabilizer when inking
- Export the result as PNG, JPG, or PSD when you are done
Core Advantages
- Painting first: the interface and shortcuts are tuned for tablet painting, so you can start at once
- Professional and free: features rival commercial painting apps, with no fees or subscriptions
- Rich resource ecosystem: brush packs and plugins import freely to extend your style
- Consistent across platforms: builds for all three desktop systems, with portable project files
- Scriptable: the Python interface automates repetitive and batch tasks
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| GPU | A graphics card supporting OpenGL 3.0 or later |
| RAM | 4 GB or more recommended, more for large canvases |
| Input device | A drawing tablet gives the best experience |
Notes
- Large canvases use lots of memory: high-resolution, multi-layer canvases consume significant RAM and VRAM
- Tablet drivers matter: install the official driver on Windows and macOS for full pressure support
- Pick the color space early: changing color space mid-project affects the colors of existing layers
- Conversions lose details: Krita projects use the .kra format, and converting to or from PSD may drop some features
