README

Project Overview

Maintained by the keepassxreboot community, KeePassXC is the most active cross-platform branch of the KeePass password-management ecosystem, covering Windows, macOS and Linux. All sensitive data lives in an offline encrypted KDBX database — where the file sits and how you back it up is entirely your call, and the official client bundles no cloud sync.

Item Value
Platform Windows, macOS, Linux
Format KDBX (compatible with KDBX4 / KDBX3)
Encryption AES-256 by default, plus Twofish and ChaCha20
Hardware keys YubiKey / OnlyKey challenge-response
License GPL-2 / GPL-3

One file holds every password — offline, encrypted, cross-platform.

Key Features

  • KDBX database: entries organized in groups with custom icons, field references, attachments and history restoration, all encrypted at rest
  • Password generator: character combinations and easy-to-remember passphrases, both rule-configurable
  • TOTP: store and generate one-time codes directly
  • Browser integration: passwordless login in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Chromium, Vivaldi, Brave and Tor-Browser, with passkey support
  • Auto-Type: a global shortcut fills username and password into any application window
  • Database reports: password health checks, HIBP breach queries and statistics
  • Migration imports: bring data in from CSV, 1Password, Bitwarden, Proton Pass and KeePass1
  • Advanced integrations: keepassxc-cli, SSH Agent and FreeDesktop.org Secret Service

Target Audience

  • Individuals who want offline storage and data sovereignty
  • Families and small teams sharing one database file across platforms
  • Security-conscious users with YubiKey-class hardware keys
  • Developers comfortable with command-line management

Quick Start

  1. Install KeePassXC from the official download page or your distribution's repositories
  2. Create a database on first launch and set a master password; binding a YubiKey challenge-response is recommended
  3. Build groups and add entries, or import from your old password manager
  4. Install the KeePassXC-Browser extension; once the database is unlocked, web logins fill without typing

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Windows 10+, macOS, mainstream Linux distributions
Database file A single KDBX file, stored locally or synced via any cloud drive you choose
Hardware (optional) YubiKey / OnlyKey

Notes

  • No cloud service: official sync does not exist; multi-device sharing means syncing the file yourself via a cloud drive or Syncthing
  • The master password is everything: a lost master password cannot be recovered, so back it up carefully
  • Browser extension is separate: browser integration requires installing the companion extension and pairing it with the local app
