README

Project Overview

Kototoro is an open-source Android app that brings manga, novels, and video into a single reader. It is Compose-first: not just the surrounding screens, but the manga/novel reader and the video player are built with Jetpack Compose. It offers local OCR and machine translation, video super-resolution (Anime4K/NCNN), DLNA casting, and WebDAV multi-device sync, and broadly supports external source ecosystems such as Mihon, Aniyomi, IReader, Legado, TVBox, and CloudStream. The app itself bundles no content.

Manga, novels, and video in one app, with reading and playback rewritten in Compose.

Key Features

  • Unified reading: manage manga, novels, and video in one app
  • All-Compose experience: the reader and video player are both Compose-built for a consistent, fluid UI
  • Local OCR translation: automatic on-device OCR and machine translation inside the reader
  • Video enhancements: super-resolution (Anime4K / NCNN), DLNA casting, and subtitle/audio track selection
  • Progress tracking: discovery and tracking across MAL, Kitsu, AniList, Bangumi, and more
  • Broad source support: Mihon, Aniyomi, IReader, Legado, TVBox, and Cloudstream3 extensions plus dynamic parsers
  • Custom spaces: built-in manga/novel/anime spaces, plus custom scopes by content type, language, and source
  • Local import: CBZ, EPUB, TXT, MKV, MP4, and other local files
  • More abilities: a built-in browser that bypasses Cloudflare challenges, reading stats, a home-screen widget, and a Telegram backup bot

Target Audience

  • Android users who read manga, novels, and watch video
  • Users relying on Mihon, Legado, and other extension sources
  • Readers who need local OCR to translate foreign comics
  • Users who want a unified Compose UI and smooth playback

Quick Start

  1. Download the latest APK from Releases and install it
  2. Complete the in-app setup wizard to configure GitHub mirrors and download core source plugins
  3. Add sources in "Settings -> Content Sources" via a repository or JSON import
  4. Open manga, novels, or video to read and play, enabling OCR translation and super-resolution as needed
  5. Configure WebDAV sync for multi-device use

Core Advantages

  • Three in one: manga, novels, and video share one app, with no switching around
  • Broad source compatibility: covers mainstream extension ecosystems for many content options
  • On-device AI: OCR and machine translation run locally, easing foreign-language reading
  • Playback boosts: super-resolution, casting, and multi-track selection improve viewing

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android
Architecture Mainstream Android architectures
Network Needed for source browsing, extension downloads, and sync

Notes

  • The app bundles and recommends no third-party sources; all content comes from user-installed extensions
  • OCR translation and video super-resolution are demanding and may be slow on low-end devices
  • Some features, such as Cloudflare bypass and OTA delta updates, rely on third-party implementations
  • Using third-party content must comply with local laws; the developers assume no liability
