README

Project Overview

Limbo is a QEMU-based emulator for Android that brings full virtualization to phones. It supports emulation of x86/x86_64, ARM/ARM64, PowerPC/PowerPC64, and Sparc, split into separate modules per target architecture. You can create and configure virtual machines and attach disk images to run other operating systems on an Android device.

An emulator that runs QEMU virtual machines on Android phones.

Key Features

  • Multi-architecture emulation: x86/x86_64, ARM/ARM64, PowerPC/PowerPC64, and Sparc
  • VM management: create and configure virtual machines and save setups for later boots
  • Disk images: built-in qcow2 templates from 1G to 20G usable as virtual hard disks
  • Hardware configuration: set memory, CPU, and other virtual hardware parameters
  • Per-architecture distribution: an install package for each target architecture

Target Audience

  • Tinkerers who want to run other operating systems on a phone
  • Enthusiasts doing cross-architecture experiments on mobile
  • Developers interested in how QEMU is integrated on Android

Quick Start

  1. Download the package for your target architecture from the project wiki and install it
  2. Open the app and create a virtual machine, choosing the target architecture
  3. Configure memory, CPU, and other parameters, using a built-in disk template or your own image
  4. Prepare installation media and start the virtual machine
  5. Install an operating system inside the VM or boot an existing one

Core Advantages

  • Broad architecture coverage: one project spans mainstream and niche instruction sets
  • Native QEMU: reuses QEMU's mature emulation capabilities
  • Ready-made disk templates: several qcow2 templates save you from creating disks by hand
  • Free and open source: released under GPL-2.0

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android
Device architecture Intel x86 or ARM Android device
Storage Depends on the OS image and virtual disk size
Other You must supply the OS image to install

Notes

  • You must provide a lawful operating system image and installation media
  • VM performance depends on device hardware; heavier systems may run slowly
  • Packages are provided per architecture, so choose the version that matches your needs
