README

Project Overview

mpvEx (also called mpvExtended) is an Android media player built on libmpv, forked from mpv-android, aiming to keep mpv's power while offering a simple, easy-to-use interface. It is written in Kotlin with Jetpack Compose and follows the Material 3 Expressive style. Beyond local playback it also supports network streams and LAN shares, and it is completely free and open source with no ads.

mpv's power wrapped in a friendly and good-looking Android interface.

Key Features

  • Easy interface: simpler, more intuitive playback and browsing than raw mpv
  • Material 3 Expressive design: a modern style that stays consistent with the system
  • Picture-in-picture and background playback: PiP window and continued playback in the background
  • Network streaming: play network streams plus SMB, FTP, and WebDAV shares
  • High-quality rendering: high-quality video rendering
  • File management: a media picker with tree and folder view modes plus search
  • Subtitles and audio tracks: external subtitle and external audio support
  • Zoom gestures: pinch and gesture-based video zoom
  • Playlist management: custom playlists
  • Configuration and scripting: advanced configuration and scripting support

Target Audience

  • Android users who want a good-looking, easy player
  • People who often watch local high-definition videos and series
  • Users who need to reach NAS or LAN shares
  • Advanced users who customize a player with scripts

Quick Start

  1. Download the stable APK from Releases; most devices should pick arm64-v8a
  2. Install and open the app and grant media and storage read permissions
  3. Use the media picker in tree or folder mode to find and play a video
  4. Configure network shares (SMB, FTP, WebDAV) and custom playlists in Settings
  5. During playback switch external subtitles and audio tracks, and use PiP and background playback
  6. Enable advanced configuration and scripting for finer control

Core Advantages

  • Power meets usability: a friendly interface layered over mpv's strong core
  • No ads or nagging: fully free and open source, with no ads and no excess permissions
  • Broad media sources: local files, network streams, and LAN shares all play
  • Modern look: the Material 3 Expressive interface stays consistent with the system theme

System Requirements
