README

Project Overview

Coopanion puts an AI pet that chats, listens, and with your permission uses the computer on the bottom edge of your screen. It is called Coo: it talks in speech bubbles, walks along the edge, and wanders on its own when ignored. Speech recognition runs locally (FunASR or Whisper), memory lives in the workspace's PARTNER.md with a version for every change, and the interface plus first-run guide come in 11 languages.

A tiny AI companion on the bottom edge, ready to chat, listen, and click for you.

Item Value
Platform Windows 10/11 x64, macOS 13+, 64-bit Linux
Stack Electron + Cortico
Models API keys for 13 services, or a ChatGPT account
Speech Local FunASR (about 230 MB) or Whisper (about 360 MB)
UI languages 11, following system language

Key Features

  • Bubble chat: hold a key and speak or just type, Coo answers in a bubble with recognition done locally
  • Memory: remembers your topics and how you poke or pat it, written to PARTNER.md with version history
  • Computer use: clicking buttons, typing, switching windows, always asking before it acts
  • Activity bubbles: animated icons show when Coo is thinking, reading, searching, writing, or using the computer
  • Figures and dress up: five Coo color schemes plus the DeepSeek Chan whale girl (eight palettes, three outfits), more figure packs importable
  • Alarms and extensions: ask Coo to set alarms; the Extensions page installs Worlds like a QQ bot, drawing room, and mini games
  • OBS overlay: add Coo and its bubbles to OBS as a transparent Browser Source

Everyday Interaction

  • Voice: tap Left Alt, hold it and speak, release to send, the recognizer downloads during the guide
  • Typing: rest the pointer on Coo and click the bubble button, or double-press Left Ctrl anywhere to open the typing box, up to 4 images per paste
  • Touch: click to poke, sweep its head to pat, drag to pick up and throw, toss it onto another display to move it there
  • Permission levels: ask-each-turn, ask-before-acting, ask-once (default, one yes lasts 30 minutes), and never-ask

Model Access

  • 13 services: OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, xAI, OpenRouter, DeepSeek, Kimi, Qwen, MiniMax, Zhipu GLM, Doubao, Baidu Qianfan, and StepFun, just paste an API key
  • ChatGPT account: no key needed, sign in via browser and usage counts toward your plan
  • Cost tracking: the Usage & cost page logs daily tokens and spend, with built-in prices for several vendors
  • Privacy boundary: keys, memory, chats, and settings stay on your machine, only the service you configured receives what you say

Install

  1. Windows: download Coopanion-Setup-.exe from Releases or unpack the portable build, program and data stay inside the install folder
  2. macOS: download the arm64 or x64 dmg and drag it into Applications, first launch needs Open Anyway in Privacy & Security
  3. Linux: install the deb with apt, other distros use the AppImage (Ubuntu 22.04+ installs libfuse2t64 first)
  4. Follow the bubble guide on first start for your name, Coo's personality, walking, model service, and speech model download

Target Audience

  • Users who want a companion AI on the desktop
  • Tinkerers exploring local speech and computer use
  • VTubers adding interactive overlays to OBS streams
  • Geeks decorating their desktop with a pet

Linux 64-bit desktop, X11 or XWayland, glibc 2.32+ for speech

Notes

  • Computer use is off by default: enable it on the Habits page, and terminal typing and Win+R always get one extra confirmation
  • macOS permissions: grant Microphone, Input Monitoring, Screen Recording, and Accessibility one by one, updates may require re-granting
  • Portable limit: up to 5 instances run at once, and the portable build does not self-update
  • Anonymous stats: count-only telemetry goes to survey.palailab.org by default and can be turned off in Habits
  • Linux dependencies: computer use needs xdotool and zenity, Wayland screenshots need one of grim and friends
