README

Project Overview

Modu Reader is a cross-platform ebook reader built with Flutter that brings books, notes, reading progress, and AI conversations into one app. It imports several ebook formats and offers customizable typography, narration, and selection tools. For semantic search you can build a local index or connect to a remote embedding service.

Read first, then ask questions about the current chapter.

Key Features

  • Multi-format library: imports EPUB, PDF, MOBI, AZW3, FB2, TXT, and Markdown
  • Library management: search by title, filter by reading status, and organize into folders or pin books
  • Typography and themes: adjust font, weight, line and paragraph spacing, and margins, with day, dark, OLED, and e-ink modes
  • Custom styles: several presets and visual controls, plus custom code and regex highlights
  • AI reading: ask about the current chapter, customize skills, and continue conversations
  • Optional narration: choose a voice, edit narration prompts, and listen at up to 4x speed
  • Translation and search: translate in the reader, switch providers, and search the web
  • Offline dictionaries: import dictionaries to show definitions beside the selected word
  • Notes and highlights: capture passages, add comments, and export notes with links
  • Reading statistics: review reading time, trends, and per-book progress
  • Vector indexing: build local indexes or use a remote embedding service for semantic search
  • Sync and backup: sync through WebDAV and export or restore library backups

Target Audience

  • Readers who want to ask AI questions while reading
  • Reading enthusiasts on multiple platforms
  • Deep readers who need notes, translation, and dictionaries

Quick Start

  1. Download the installer for your platform and architecture from Releases and install it
  2. Open the app and import EPUB, PDF, or TXT books into the library
  3. For AI features, add a provider and configure a key in settings
  4. Long-press selected text while reading to translate, ask, or start narration
  5. Configure WebDAV in settings to sync your library and progress

Core Advantages

  • Local reading with no barrier: fully usable without AI, since AI and online services are all optional
  • Cross-platform coverage: packages for Android, iOS, macOS, Windows, and Linux
  • Deep typography control: from visual presets to custom code
  • Controllable data: WebDAV sync and exportable backups with separately managed credentials

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Windows, Linux, Android, macOS, iOS 16 or later
Architecture x64 and ARM64
Dependency Windows requires the WebView2 runtime

Notes

  • Local reading needs no AI account; AI, online translation, and online speech are all optional
  • Fees charged by online providers are billed by them, separately from the app
  • iOS packages carry no Apple distribution signature and must be signed before installing
