README

Project Overview

WebDAVCast TV is the TV companion to the WebDAVCast phone app, browsing and playing videos on a WebDAV server on Android TV or a TV box entirely with a remote control, no mouse or keyboard needed. It shares the core logic of dynamic server address resolution and WebDAV directory browsing with the phone version, replacing only the interaction layer with a focus-driven remote UI. It is a personal project customized for the author's own setup, not a general product.

Watch server videos from the couch with a remote.

Key Features

  • Remote browsing: a focus-driven directory grid where the direction keys pick files, OK opens or plays, and Back goes up a level
  • Playback control: long-press left or right to fast-forward or rewind continuously with progressive acceleration, releasing to stop, and the menu key toggles the control bar
  • Speed and episodes: cycle through 1x, 1.25x, 1.5x, 2x, and 0.75x speeds, with episode selection and previous or next
  • Resume history: progress is saved automatically and history is aggregated by directory, keeping only the latest entry per folder
  • QR-code setup: the settings page shows a QR code so a phone can submit the server list page address and credentials
  • System time: the player shows the current system time in the top-right corner on a transparent background

Target Audience

  • Users of Android TV or TV boxes
  • Home users with a WebDAV server
  • Personal users who want to binge shows on TV

Quick Start

  1. On first launch, open settings and enter the server list page address, WebDAV username, and password
  2. If typing on the TV is awkward, tap QR fill and submit the form from your phone
  3. Tap Query Available Servers and pick one with the remote
  4. Browse folders and play videos, using the menu key to show the control bar
  5. Press Back on the main screen to exit, and enter history from the top

Core Advantages

  • Fully remote: browsing and playback need only the remote
  • QR setup: fill TV settings from a phone, avoiding remote typing
  • Shared core: uses the same dynamic server resolution and directory browsing as the phone app

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android TV, Android TV boxes
Minimum version Android 8.0 (minSdk 26)
Dev environment JDK 17
Stack Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Media3

Notes

  • A personal project, not a general product, with no maintenance commitment
  • You must provide your own WebDAV server and server list page address
  • QR fill requires the phone and TV on the same LAN
  • The release keystore is not included; without one, the build falls back to debug signing
