README

Project Overview

Night Reader is an Android novel reader written in Flutter, aimed at long-form reading with self-managed book sources. It parses web source rules and supports search, table of contents, and content fetching, along with local TXT, TTS narration, offline caching, and backup/restore. The app bundles no readable novels or third-party sources, so you import your own.

A long-form novel reader that hands you sources, typography, narration, and offline access.

Key Features

  • Web sources: supports CSS, XPath, JSONPath, regex, JavaScript, custom HTTP headers, and cookies
  • Search and discovery: parallel search across sources with precise search, failed-source retry, and merged ranked results
  • Source validation and debugging: batch validation to find broken sources, plus stage-by-stage debugging of search, detail, contents, and content
  • Reader: adjustable font size, line height, letter spacing, paragraph spacing, first-line indent, and themes, with auto page turn and custom tap zones
  • Content processing: replacement rules to clean content, plus simplified/traditional Chinese conversion
  • TTS narration: speed, pitch, volume, and voice selection, with progress highlighting and automatic continuation
  • Offline download: download all, from the current chapter, or a chosen range, with a queue, pause, and retry
  • Backup and migration: app data backup and restore, bookshelf import/export, and TXT export

Target Audience

  • Android users reading long novels
  • Users who prefer maintaining their own source rules
  • Readers needing TTS narration and offline caching
  • Advanced users who debug and validate source availability

Quick Start

  1. Install the latest Android APK from GitHub Releases
  2. Open Night Reader and go to "Source management" to import your sources
  3. Use search or discovery to find content and add it to the shelf
  4. Create a download task in the book detail page for offline reading
  5. Adjust typography and theme in the reader, or start TTS narration

Core Advantages

  • Source autonomy: rule-based sources are the main entry, compatible with Legado-style rules and fully debuggable
  • Adjustable reading: typography and tap zones are configurable, taming long texts and unusual chapters
  • Available offline: the download queue supports pause and retry for reading on the go
  • Portable data: backup, bookshelf exchange, and TXT export ease device changes and recovery

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android
Architecture arm64-v8a
Local ebooks TXT only

Notes

  • The project bundles no readable novels or third-party sources; an empty shelf and search on first install is normal
  • Complex JavaScript, unusual encodings, anti-scraping, or login states may break individual sources
  • Automatic source subscription updates are not finished, so sources are maintained manually
  • Data structures may still evolve; keep original files and older backups alongside any Night Reader backup
