README

Project Overview

Liseur is an open-source ebook reader for Android: local EPUBs render through the Readium engine, and it connects to calibre-web, Komga, BookOrbit, liseur-sync or any OPDS catalog to unify every shelf into one library.

The reading experience follows Kindle: four themes (Light, Sepia, Dark, OLED black), per-book margins, line spacing and brightness, plus highlights, margin notes, bookmarks, dictionary lookups and footnote cards, with translation and read-aloud on top.

Item Value
Platform Android
Stack Kotlin, Jetpack Compose, Readium
Library protocols calibre-web, Komga, OPDS, Kobo sync
License MIT

One shelf for local and cloud books alike, a Kindle-grade reading experience, free and open.

Key Features

  • EPUB rendering: Readium engine with open typefaces or publisher fonts
  • Four themes: Light, Sepia, Dark and OLED black for every lighting condition
  • Layout control: margins, line spacing, brightness, page-turn or scroll per book or library-wide
  • Annotation suite: six-color highlights, margin notes, bookmarks, dictionary lookups and a notebook
  • Footnote cards: footnotes open as cards over the page instead of the back of the book
  • Translation: selected passages via the Android translator or your own server, with sentence-by-sentence page translation
  • Auto-scroll: paced scrolling continues across chapters with on-page controls
  • Remote libraries: calibre-web, Komga and OPDS built in, one-tap download all, series grouped with missing-volume tracking

Target Audience

  • Users managing ebooks with calibre-web or Komga
  • Avid EPUB readers on phones
  • Users subscribing to OPDS catalogs
  • Students and researchers who highlight and take notes

Quick Start

  1. Install the APK from Releases or grab it from F-Droid
  2. Import local EPUBs, or add a calibre-web/Komga/OPDS server
  3. The shelf sorts by reading progress; tap to read
  4. Long-press a passage to highlight, note or translate
  5. With an empty shelf, browse free books from Project Gutenberg

Core Advantages

  • One library for all: local and multiple book servers unified, series grouped automatically
  • Kindle-grade reading: layout, annotations, footnotes and dictionary in one place
  • Custom read-aloud: device voices or your own speech server
  • Fully open source: MIT licensed and available on F-Droid

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android
Stack Jetpack Compose, Readium
Network Remote libraries and translation need internet

Notes

  • EPUB first: EPUB is the core format, support for others is limited
  • Bring your own servers: calibre-web/Komga servers must be self-hosted or already available
  • Translation costs: system translation uses Android's built-in engine, custom servers bill separately
