README

Project Overview

LightNovelReader is an open-source Android light novel app written in Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, lightweight and smooth to read. It offers caching with offline-first reading, multiple switchable data sources, a bookshelf system, and EPUB export, and supports custom data sources through plugins. The app ships no content; you add data sources yourself.

A Compose reader driven by multiple data sources, focused on light novels.

Key Features

  • Multiple data sources: switch between sources with independent data, and even read manga
  • Explore and recommendations: discover new books, ranking lists, tag categories, and keyword search
  • Caching and offline: cache book content for an offline-first reading experience
  • Bookshelf: create and name shelves, favorite books, and get update notifications
  • EPUB export: export books as EPUB files
  • Plugin extension: add custom data sources and plugins, with an official template and development guide
  • Reading UI: built with Jetpack Compose, supporting Android 7.0 through 15

Target Audience

  • Android users who read light novels
  • Readers needing multiple sources and offline caching
  • People who want to export favorites to EPUB
  • Developers building custom data sources for the reader

Quick Start

  1. Download the latest release from GitHub Releases, or install from F-Droid
  2. Open the app and add or enable data sources
  3. Find books on the explore page via rankings, tags, or search
  4. Add books to the shelf and enable update notifications and caching for offline reading
  5. Choose EPUB export from a book's actions when needed

Core Advantages

  • Offline first: cached content stays readable without a network, handy for commutes
  • Independent sources: each source is managed separately and does not interfere with others
  • Extensible: a plugin template and dev guide let you write your own sources
  • Fully open source: Apache-2.0 licensed, with code and translations maintained by the community

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Android 7.0 to Android 15

Notes

  • The app ships no book content; add or build your own data sources
  • Some sources may break when upstream sites change
  • Keep periodic backups of cache and bookshelf data
  • UI translations are community-maintained, so language coverage changes with releases
