Project Overview
Embarcadero Dev-C++ is the official continuation of Bloodshed Dev-C++ and Orwell Dev-C++, sponsored by Embarcadero: a lightweight C/C++ IDE and code editor for Windows with over 67 million downloads since 2000.
It compiles with the MinGW port of GCC and also works with Cygwin or any other GCC-based toolchain; built natively in Delphi without Electron, it stays light on memory and covers writing, compiling and GDB debugging in one place.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| Platform | Windows 7/8/10 |
| Compiler | TDM-GCC 9.2.0 (32/64-bit), other GCC toolchains supported |
| Language standard | C++17, partial C++20 |
| License | GPL-2.0 |
Sixty million downloads of C-classroom standard, write, compile and debug right after install.
Key Features
- Full IDE: edit, compile, run and debug in one place with a friendly localized UI
- TDM-GCC bundled: a preconfigured 32/64-bit GCC toolchain works out of the box
- GDB integration: breakpoints, stepping and variable inspection inside the IDE
- Code assistance: completion, Code Insight, class browser and function listing
- Highlighting editor: customizable colors with Unicode and font ligature support
- Project manager: templates to create Windows apps, consoles, static libraries and DLLs quickly
- AStyle formatting: one-click style cleanup
- GPROF profiling: built-in performance profiling support
Target Audience
- Students and self-learners starting C/C++
- Teachers who need a light IDE for class
- Competitive programmers wanting a local toolchain
- Developers preferring native apps over heavyweight IDEs
Quick Start
- Download the installer or portable build from Releases (the with-compiler build needs no setup)
- Pick your language and theme on first launch
- Create a source file or use the project wizard for a console app
- F9 to compile, F10 to run, or F11 to compile and run
- Press F8 to debug with GDB, breakpoints and stepping included
Core Advantages
- Native and light: a native Delphi app without Electron, smooth even on old machines
- Portable: a no-install build compiles anywhere from a USB stick
- Compiler freedom: TDM-GCC by default, or wire up Cygwin and any GCC-based toolchain
- Free and open: GPL-2.0 licensed with no feature gates
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 7, 8.1, 10 |
| Compiler | TDM-GCC 9.2.0 32/64-bit (bundled) |
| Footprint | Native app with low memory use |
Notes
- Windows only: no macOS or Linux editions
- Partial C++20: the newest standard features are incomplete, verify cutting-edge usage yourself
- Parallel builds on: release builds parallelize via MAKE jobs, disable it on low-spec machines
