Project Overview
Legado (Yuedu) is a free and open-source reading app, refactored on Kotlin Multiplatform so one codebase covers Android, desktop (Windows / macOS / Linux), iOS, and HarmonyOS. Its core idea is custom book sources: you define rules to scrape web data for search, discovery, and source switching, while also reading local TXT and EPUB files with a highly customizable interface. The app itself provides no content — you import sources and data yourself.
An open-source reader that hands all the rules of finding and reading books to you.
Key Features
- Custom book sources: define rules to scrape web data, with built-in, easy-to-follow rule documentation
- Multiple shelves: switch freely between list and grid bookshelves
- Search and discovery: source rules power search and discovery, with all find-and-read features customizable
- Content subscription: subscribe to whatever content you want and read it in one place
- Replacement cleaning: remove ads and replace body content
- Local reading: read local TXT and EPUB with manual browsing or smart scanning
- Reading customization: switch font, color, background, line and paragraph spacing, bold, and simplified/traditional conversion
- Page-turn modes: cover, simulation, slide, scroll, and more
- One-click import: import sources, feeds, themes, and other config via
legado://import/...links
Target Audience
- Android users who read with custom book sources
- Users who need local TXT and EPUB reading
- People who want to keep reading on desktop or across devices
- Users who prefer an open-source, ad-free reader
Quick Start
- Download and install the build for your platform from Releases
- Import book sources first, or open local TXT and EPUB files directly
- Find books via search or discovery, add them to the shelf, and start reading
- Adjust font, background, spacing, and page-turn mode in the reading view
- For batch imports, use
legado://import/...links
Core Advantages
- Fully custom rules: you control how search, table of contents, and content are fetched
- One codebase, many platforms: Kotlin Multiplatform shares one codebase across phone and desktop
- Open and ad-free: public source, continuous improvement, and no ads
- Mature ecosystem: source rules, help docs, and companion web tools form a complete ecosystem
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Android (primary); desktop, iOS, and HarmonyOS are in development or theoretical support |
| Architecture | Mainstream architectures per platform |
| Content | The app provides no content; import sources or local files yourself |
Notes
- Except for Android, other platforms are in development or theoretical support, with Android as the reference
- HarmonyOS builds require enabling the
enableOhosTargetswitch - The iOS release is an unsigned IPA and must be sideloaded with a self-signing tool
- The app provides no book content; prepare legitimate sources and files yourself
