README
Project Overview
Javdex is a local media management tool centered on catalog numbers, supporting Windows, macOS and Linux. It scans directories, fills in covers and metadata, browses by actor, studio and series, lets you build lists and import web bookmarks, and exchanges data with other media software via NFO. It works either standalone or with the library hosted on a NAS, browsable read-only from browser on phone, tablet and TV.
Turn your local collection into a searchable media library browsable across devices.
Key Features
- Multiple libraries: create several libraries each with its own source folders, scan schedule and default scraping sources, with recent additions and random picks on the home page
- Unified resources: scans local videos and STRM files, and adds direct, web, Magnet and ED2K links, with several resources linked to one film
- Metadata scraping: fetches title, synopsis, release date, rating, actors, tags, covers and sample images, with batch jobs that can pause, resume or cancel
- Field-level sources: choose a plugin per field, such as one for titles and another for images, selecting fields and update modes
- Actors and series: maintain actor portraits, aliases and bios, detect faces locally and adjust portrait framing, and merge duplicate records
- List organization: collect films across libraries and import external lists from the web with AI matching against your library
- AI-assisted capture: paste a detail page URL to let AI extract metadata, previewing and selecting fields before applying
- LAN access: enable the web service to browse, search and play from browsers on phone, tablet or TV, with pairing-code authorization
- NFO interoperability: build libraries from existing local NFO files and export for Kodi, Jellyfin, Emby, Plex and more
Target Audience
- Users with large local video collections to organize
- Users who want cross-device access to their library
- Users hosting their library on a NAS
- Users who need interoperability with Kodi, Jellyfin and similar software
Quick Start
- Download and launch the installer for your system from Releases
- Create a library and set its source folders and scan schedule
- After scanning, fill in covers and metadata in the detail view, scraping in bulk when needed
- To browse on a phone or TV, enable the web service in settings and pair as prompted
- Existing NFO data from MDC, Javinizer and similar tools imports during scanning
Core Advantages
- Local-first: the database and images stay on your machine by default, with a movable image folder and optional image encryption
- Always-on remote: the server runs independently of the desktop app and serves read-only browser access
- Privacy controls: privacy mode hides covers and samples, and local face detection uploads no images
- Portable metadata: NFO files and images interoperate with mainstream media software, so switching tools loses nothing
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows, macOS, Linux |
| Server | Docker supported, x86_64 and ARM64 |
| AI features | A working model service required |
| LAN access | Intended for trusted local networks |
Notes
- AI capture, external list import and the plugin dev assistant need a model service; plain scanning and scraping do not
- Server and desktop must run the same version; back up your data fully before upgrading
- The web interface performs no transcoding, so playback depends on the device and browser
- NFO import and export are one-off operations and are not a full library backup
