README
Project Overview
MoRead is a local-first Android reading app with no account requirement and no analytics. It imports your own TXT and EPUB books and offers custom-drawn typography and page turning. The optional AI companion uses a bring-your-own-key model, connecting directly to providers you configure, with no proxy server; without a network connection it remains a full offline reader.
Your books and notes stay on your device, and you bring your own AI.
Key Features
- Local reading: imports TXT and EPUB with automatic encoding detection and rule-based chapter splitting
- Native rendering: classic and modern page-curl, cover, and slide animations
- Automatic reading: continuous scrolling or timed page turns with pause and adjustment
- Listening: system or cloud speech with sentence highlighting and automatic page turns
- AI companion: bring-your-own-key access to chat, embedding, speech, and image models from several providers
- Character cards: import character cards, world books, and custom avatars for in-character chats
- Outlines and characters: generates chapter recaps and scans the whole book for character cards
- Reading statistics: yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily views with reading heatmaps
- Private storage: keys are encrypted, and books are imported through the system file picker
Target Audience
- Privacy-conscious readers who use only local books
- Users who want AI companionship and listening features
- Android users who like deep typography customization
Quick Start
- Download the signed APK from Releases; Android 8.0 or later is required
- Open the app and import TXT or EPUB books from the bookshelf
- For AI features, add a provider address and your own API key on the providers page
- Long-press text in the reader to translate, explain, or ask; the toolbar opens the contents and read-aloud controls
Core Advantages
- Local-first: no account, no analytics, no proprietary backend, with data on-device
- Bring your own key: AI connects directly to your chosen providers without a third-party proxy
- Works offline: fully usable as a local reader without a network
- Custom typography: progress is decoupled from layout, so changing font size never loses your place
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| OS | Android 8.0 or later |
| Build | JDK 21, Android SDK 37 |
| AI features | Requires your own provider API key |
Notes
- The app provides no book content and no online sources; content comes from local imports
- AI output is generated by third-party models you configure and should be judged for accuracy
- Fees charged by cloud providers are billed by them, separately from the app
