Overview

Congcong School turns primary school textbooks for grades 1-6 into a free, open-source, non-profit online learning platform: Chinese, math, English, and science follow textbook chapters, with a quiz after each lesson, and questions, options, and explanations all narrated. The web app covers desktop and mobile browsers, with an Android online client and an iOS project alongside; learning records stay in the current browser — no courses for sale, no ads. Current version is v1.7.3.

Kids learn through play along their textbooks — any internet-connected device will do.

• Unit quizzes: follow textbook chapters and practice right after each lesson, at least 6 questions per set
• Narrated explanations: 2,537 regular lessons ship explanation data, auto-played on entry and unlocking the next step after listening
• Text read-along: Chinese and English texts read sentence by sentence against original textbook pages, with full reading and repeat-after practice
• Recording: in-browser recording and playback without uploading, requiring HTTPS and microphone permission
• Extra stories: 2 AI-graded stories per unit with reading comprehension and children's illustrations
• Combo rewards: consecutive correct answers trigger combo animations and voice encouragement with instant explanations
• Reports: wrong-answer review, daily goals, weekly reports, and parent-controlled daily time limits
• Wardrobe: spend gems earned from learning to unlock outfits for the mascot

Quick Start

Online

1. Open the demo site linked in the project README on any browser — no install needed
2. Records stay in the current browser; clearing browser data loses progress

Docker

1. Prepare Git and Docker with at least 40 GB free disk
2. git clone --branch main https://github.com/wuwangzhang1216/congcong-school.git and enter the directory
3. docker compose build --build-arg ASSETS_RELEASE=v1.7.3 — the first build downloads and verifies all assets
4. docker compose up -d --no-build --wait, then open http://localhost:8080

Static site

1. Download install-release.py from the Release page
2. python3 install-release.py --tag v1.7.3 --mode static --root site
3. python3 -m http.server 8080 --directory site, then visit http://localhost:8080

Notes

• Local records: web progress lives in the browser with no cloud account or cross-device sync yet
• Teacher review in progress: questions are AI-generated from textbooks and continuously reviewed; resource counts do not imply per-question approval
• Large audio footprint: the full package needs about 40 GB, split into audio archives of no more than 1.4 GB each
• Browser limits: some browsers block first autoplay — tap the speaker icon to resume; recording requires HTTPS
