README

Project Overview

Format Converter is a Windows tool that converts Office documents entirely locally by driving the Office engine installed on your machine (Microsoft Office 2013 or later, WPS also works), so documents never leave the computer, ideal for privacy-sensitive workflows.

It uses CustomTkinter for a modern dark interface and supports drag-and-drop batch conversion. Releases ship a packaged EXE of about 105MB that runs without Python, and the project is open source under MIT.

Item Value
Platform Windows
Dependency local Office 2013+ or WPS
Form packaged EXE (about 105MB)
License MIT

It converts with your own Office: nothing sent to the cloud, no ads, drag files in, pick a format and get results.

Key Features

  • Word conversion: doc, docx, odt, rtf, wps, wpt, wpd, txt, md and html convert to PDF, docx, txt, md or html
  • PPT conversion: presentations convert to PDF or pptx, export page-by-page PNG images, or land in docx
  • Batch processing: drop many files at once and convert them all to one target format
  • Drag and drop: files dragged into the window join the queue directly
  • Fully local: conversions run on the local Office engine, nothing uploads to any server
  • Dark interface: a coherent modern dark UI built with CustomTkinter
  • No environment needed: the packaged EXE from Releases skips Python setup

Target Audience

  • Office workers who refuse to upload documents to converter websites
  • Archivists batch-converting legacy documents
  • Users with local Office but no dedicated converter
  • Presenters who occasionally need PPT exported to images or PDF

Quick Start

  1. Make sure Microsoft Office 2013+ or WPS is installed
  2. Download the packaged EXE from Releases and run it
  3. Drag the files you want converted into the window
  4. Pick the target format and start conversion
  5. Check the output directory for results

Core Advantages

  • Private and dependable: everything converts locally, sensitive documents stay put
  • High fidelity: driving the local Office engine preserves layout better than most self-built converters
  • Batch convenience: process a pile of files in one pass without upload-download loops
  • Open source: MIT licensed with conversion logic in plain sight

System Requirements

Item Requirement
OS Windows
Office Microsoft Office 2013+ or WPS
Run mode packaged EXE or Python from source

Notes

  • Local Office required: without Office or WPS installed it cannot work, and quality follows the installed engine
  • Legacy formats vary: support for doc, wps and similar depends on what the local engine handles
  • No encrypted files: password-protected documents must be unlocked before conversion
