ShuTing (听书) is a local e-book reader built around listening while reading: it handles EPUB, PDF, TXT, MOBI and AZW3, reads aloud sentence by sentence with Microsoft neural voices and follow-along highlighting, supports unlimited variable speed without pitch shift, and exports whole books to MP3.

Project Overview
ShuTing is a local e-book reader with listening-while-reading at its core: it combines an EPUB, PDF, TXT, MOBI and AZW3 library with Microsoft neural voice narration, reading sentence by sentence with follow-along highlighting, while reading and listening positions are remembered separately.
Narration speed is freely adjustable without pitch shift and with no upper limit, and whole books export to MP3 for offline listening. The library reflows text and scans folders in place without moving files, TXT files get automatic GB18030 detection and fake-book filtering. The project is MIT licensed with a portable browser mode needing no Node install.

Two ways to open one book: switch to your ears when your eyes tire, with narration, following and highlighting in one flow.
Key Features
- Multi-format library: EPUB, PDF, TXT, MOBI and AZW3 imported and managed together
- Sentence narration: Microsoft neural voices read sentence by sentence with the current line highlighted
- Unlimited speed: adjustable rate without pitch shift and no ceiling, as fast as you like
- Split positions: reading and listening positions are tracked separately for painless switching
- Whole-book export: render an entire book to MP3 for offline commutes
- Library scanning: scan folders in place without moving originals, with text reflow
- Smart TXT handling: automatic GB18030 detection plus fake-book filtering
- Portable mode: run in a browser without Node, unzip and go
Target Audience
- Commuters who listen on the road and read at the desk
- Users with eye fatigue who prefer auditory reading
- Collectors with shelves of TXT and MOBI files
- Podcast fans who want books as MP3s
Quick Start
- Download portable.zip from Releases and extract it
- Open it in a browser via the portable mode, or run with your own Node setup
- Scan a local library folder and wait for the import
- Open a book, start narration and adjust the speed
- Export the whole book as MP3 when you need offline listening
Core Advantages
- Listening and reading unified: narration blends into reading without position clashes
- Speed freedom: pitch-preserving, uncapped rates make skimming efficient
- Local privacy: library and narration stay on device, nothing uploads
- Portable: browser mode skips environment setup, copy and run
System Requirements
| Item | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Runtime | a modern desktop browser (portable) or Node.js |
| Library formats | EPUB, PDF, TXT, MOBI, AZW3 |
| Voice | Microsoft neural voice endpoint |
Notes
- Bring your own voice endpoint: Microsoft neural voices need a working endpoint configured on your side
- Scanned PDF limits: image-only scanned PDFs lack a text layer and cannot be narrated
- Portable is light: the browser mode targets quick use, heavy library management deserves a full deployment
